The Center for Defending the Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ) calls the Yemeni government to stop violations against journalists

The center added that the current situation of journalists in Yemen is very dangerous and intolerable. Therefore, we require solidarity from all human rights organizations defending the freedom of the media, in order to ensure the safety and security of journalists and to put pressure on the government to respect the rights of journalists, as well as the people rights to be informed.

The director of the CDFJ, Nidal Mansour, confirmed that what's happening is going beyond the borders of just preventing journalists from having access to information and imposing prior censorship and prohibition of the practice of the profession and the legal prosecution and issuance of sentences, to the disappearance of journalists without knowing their destiny. Mr. Mansour pointed out that even if the government was not involved, it is responsible for the safety of its citizens and should disclose their fate and punish the perpetrators to prevent the propagation of the culture of impunity in Yemen.

Mansour said that journalists are not a party of the conflict, thus, the Government may not penalize them for their coverage of events in regions of tension, knowing that it is their duty and responsibility towards society.

It is worth mentioning that Yemen has seen months of action against journalists such as imprisonment and detention, assault and detention in unknown locations. The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate reported between last August and October the disappearance of the journalist "Saddam Al Ashmouri" from the English language journal Yemen Times, and claimed in a statement for the Interior Ministry for the disclosure of his destiny and the preservation of his life.

Among the journalists who were detained by Yemeni authorities: journalist Fouad Rashid, editor in chief of "Al- Mukalla Press," while the Yemeni human rights organizations announced the disappearance of the journalist, Mohamed al-Maqaleh and Salah Alsaqladi, in addition to the attack on Al-Manar channel, correspondent and crew in addition to the repeated incidents of abuse and shooting at the residence of Mohammed Al Sharabi, reporter to “Al Diyar” newspaper.
